A helpdesk holds a lot more than support conversations. Tickets can contain account details, screenshots, server names and information customers would never put on a public website. Its underlying software deserves the same attention as the services it supports.
Zammad released version 7.2.2 on 8 October 2026 to address a security issue affecting its DEB and RPM packages from packager.io.
The installation method matters
The vendor describes a local privilege escalation issue that could allow escalation to root under certain local conditions. That is a specific description of the flaw. It does not say an unauthenticated visitor can gain root access simply by opening the helpdesk.
Zammad says its SaaS instances are unaffected and those customers need take no action for this issue. It advises self-hosted installations to upgrade to the latest version immediately.
For your own deployment, check the installed package and its source. A remembered version number is not enough if the system was rebuilt or moved since the last maintenance visit.
Give the update a named owner
Support teams often depend on an application that another team installed years ago. Start by finding the person or supplier responsible for maintaining the operating system and Zammad installation.
Confirm who will perform the upgrade, which maintenance procedure they will use and how support staff will be told about any interruption. Include the person who manages incoming email, since the helpdesk may receive work even while nobody is signed in.
Use the vendor's installation-specific upgrade instructions. A package deployment, container deployment and hosted service have different maintenance paths. Applying instructions for the wrong one can create unnecessary recovery work.
Check the support workflow afterwards
Once the upgrade is complete, verify the installed version and run a small end-to-end support test. Send a test message, confirm it becomes a ticket, assign it and send a reply. Check that the reply arrives in the expected mailbox.
If customers use a portal, test that route as well. Include a representative attachment and any integration your team relies on, such as an identity provider or monitoring system.
Agree how to handle tickets that arrived during the maintenance window. Staff need to know whether a delay is expected or whether a connector has stopped processing messages.
Separate patching from incident investigation
Installing the update addresses the software issue covered by the release. If you already suspect unauthorised access, preserve the relevant logs and follow your incident process as well. An update result cannot tell you what happened before it was installed.
Record the deployment type, new version and completed checks in the maintenance log. For agencies and managed service providers, include the customer's helpdesk in the same software inventory used for their websites and servers.
The useful action here is precise: identify package-based installations, apply the appropriate update and confirm support can still receive and answer tickets.
